IDE Group provide connectivity for the world’s largest sport and music festival.
Diamond Sporting Group are the proud creators of the world’s largest sport and music festival, Bournemouth 7s, as well as the owners of Viper 10 Sportswear and V10 Creative. They were founded in 2008 with a passion for sport and creativity, and consist of a young, dynamic team who are dedicated to unfailingly delivering outstanding results.
Diamond Sporting Group approached IDE Group to provide connectivity to their annual Bournemouth 7s rugby festival; the event is hosted in a rural location near to Bournemouth Airport. There is no pre-existing fixed infrastructure to support connectivity, posing quite a challenge for the organisers.
Bournemouth 7s is the world’s largest combined sport and music festival, since launch in 2008 it has seen constant growth year on year, meaning they could no longer rely on the basic ADSL lines delivering less than 10Mb of domestic broadband. Diamond Sporting Group needed reliable connectivity for commerce, security, and communications around the site, as well as advertising, social media, and PR for the sponsors.
Part of Diamond Sporting Group’s problem was that the site, a year-round sports facility, is rented for the festival, meaning that the connectivity solution would need to be a temporary installation. The install would also need to be completed in one day, used for five days, and then removed in one day with zero environmental impact.
Connectivity in action
Using the maximum reach of a cherry picker, the solution was installed in one day as planned, tested, handed over to the on-site IT team, and consistently delivered over 100Mb of uncontended bandwidth direct to the site during the five day festival. With no failures, delays or interruptions, the infrastructure was then removed in two hours at the end of the event with no trace of environmental impact.
The connectivity was so reliable that a portion of excess bandwidth was allocated to an open Wi-Fi network, allowing festival goers to use Wi-Fi within the main arena. Diamond Sporting Group plans to expand next year to provide on-site Wi-Fi for all 30,000 sports enthusiasts and festival goers.
